Surgeons at University College London Hospital have successfully removed a brain tumour using live artificial intelligence assistance, in what researchers describe as a world first.
Rhys Hibbert, a 48-year-old father of two, underwent the pioneering procedure after an 11mm non-cancerous tumour on his pituitary gland began affecting his peripheral vision and threatened his sight.
During the operation, the AI system analysed live video, tracked surgical instruments and mapped the likely locations of critical blood vessels and nerves, helping surgeons identify safer areas for tumour removal.
The system was trained on hundreds of surgical videos and acts as a real-time “second pair of eyes,” while doctors retain full control of the procedure.
Hibbert’s peripheral vision improved immediately after surgery, while his energy and other symptoms gradually recovered. Researchers now plan a larger clinical trial and hope to develop the technology into a “Surgical ChatGPT” for use during operations.
