Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-2 has arrested 10 people, including the alleged key suspect in a viral daylight mugging in Dhaka’s Shyamoli, during separate anti-crime drives in Mohammadpur and surrounding areas.
The arrests were made on August 26 in Mohammadpur, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Tejgaon Industrial Area amid growing complaints over teen gangs, mugging and other criminal activities.
Among those detained are seven alleged teen gang leaders and muggers, a fugitive sentenced to life imprisonment, a drug dealer and an alleged top criminal.
Mohammad Nayan, 28, identified by RAB as the main suspect in the Shyamoli mugging video that went viral on social media in April, was arrested from Nabinagar Housing in Mohammadpur. RAB said he admitted to being involved with an organised mugging gang.
Other arrests include an alleged ‘Patali Group’ gang leader, a drug dealer carrying 190 yaba tablets, and several individuals accused in multiple robbery, theft and drug cases. Two suspects were also detained with samurai swords and another with a Chinese axe.
RAB-2 Commander Naimul Hasan said operations against teen gangs, muggers and organised criminal groups in Mohammadpur and neighbouring areas would continue.
Legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are underway, RAB said.
