Ten former ministers, MPs and senior officials from the ousted Awami League government have been brought before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in connection with alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.
They were taken to the tribunal in prison vans from different jails under tight security on Thursday morning (August 27).
Those produced before the tribunal include former ministers Golam Dastagir Gazi, Amir Hossain Amu, Abdur Razzaq, Shajahan Khan and Dr Dipu Moni; former MP Lt Col (retd) Faruk Khan; former judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik; former home secretary Jahangir Alam; former MP Solaiman Selim; and former adviser to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Toufiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury.
The prosecution has set Thursday as the date for submitting the investigation report in the case, prompting the court appearance of the 10 accused currently in custody.
They are being investigated over allegations of killings, attacks, torture and other crimes against humanity during the July uprising. The prosecution is expected to submit formal charges against the accused in phases following completion of investigations.
The case initially named 46 accused, including banned Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. Formal charges have since been brought against several accused in separate proceedings, while Dipu Moni and Abdur Razzaq have also been accused in the Shapla Chattar massacre case.
