Former military officer Ziaul Ahsan was produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday in a crimes-against-humanity case over the alleged enforced disappearance of current Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed in 2015.
Ziaul was brought before the tribunal in the morning, following an order issued on August 10 in response to a prosecution petition. The prosecution is expected to seek his arrest shown in the case.
Salahuddin Ahmed filed a complaint with the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal last year over his alleged abduction. The complaint named Ziaul Ahsan, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former police chiefs Benazir Ahmed and AKM Shahidul Haque, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, former Special Branch chief Monirul Islam, and several unidentified individuals.
According to a complaint filed by Salahuddin’s wife, Hasina Ahmed, a group of men identifying themselves as members of the Detective Branch picked him up from a house in Uttara, Dhaka, on the night of March 10, 2015. At the time, Salahuddin was serving as a joint secretary general of the BNP.
He remained missing for nearly two months before being found in Meghalaya, India, on May 11, 2015.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, Salahuddin returned to Bangladesh on August 11 after years abroad.
