No Bangladeshi citizens have been reported killed or injured so far in the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal, Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Nepal Md Shafiqur Rahman said on Thursday.
Speaking on Thursday morning, the ambassador said the Bangladesh Embassy was closely monitoring the situation and maintaining regular communication with the Nepalese authorities.
He said the embassy was actively checking for information about Bangladeshi nationals in the affected areas. So far, it has received no reports of any Bangladeshi being killed or injured.
The embassy is keeping a close watch on the situation as a large number of foreign tourists remain missing in the disaster-hit areas, the ambassador added.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the floods in Nepal has risen to 165, according to government figures released Thursday morning. A total of 826 people remain missing, including 579 tourists, 466 of whom are foreign nationals. Eighty-five personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force are also among the missing.
The floods and landslides have caused extensive damage to roads, bridges and power infrastructure across Nepal. Government figures show that 35 motorable bridges, 45 suspension bridges and around 40 kilometres of roads have been damaged.
Rescue operations are underway in remote areas, with helicopters being used to evacuate stranded people and deliver emergency assistance.
Bangladesh has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extensive damage caused by the disaster. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman conveyed condolences to the families of those killed and wished for the swift rescue of those still missing and the recovery of the injured.
The government has also said Bangladesh stands ready to provide necessary assistance to Nepal in its relief and rescue efforts.
