Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has once again nominated Delawar Hossain as its candidate for the Thakurgaon-1 by-election, also naming him as the candidate of the 11-party alliance.
The announcement was made at a meeting of party officials at the Thakurgaon district Jamaat office on Sunday (August 30). Maulana Abdul Halim, assistant secretary general of the central committee and director of the Rangpur-Dinajpur region, formally announced his candidacy.
Delawar Hossain is an assistant secretary of Jamaat’s Dhaka South City unit and a member of its central executive council. He previously served as president of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
He also contested the Thakurgaon-1 seat in the national parliamentary election held on February 12.
Abdul Halim said Jamaat had decided to participate in all elections as part of its movement to restore democracy. He said the 11-party alliance had selected Delawar Hossain as its joint candidate for the by-election.
The Thakurgaon-1 seat, covering Sadar, Ruhia and Bhulli, fell vacant after BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who won the seat in the February 12 election, was later elected president. The Election Commission subsequently declared the seat vacant and began the process for a by-election.
