The government is working to identify and address weaknesses in Bangladesh’s technical and vocational education system, with plans to improve infrastructure, update curricula, strengthen laboratories and enhance teacher training, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan said on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference at the Technical and Madrasa Education Division of the Education Ministry, the minister said Bangladesh plans to draw on China’s experience to make technical education more aligned with industry needs.
“We want to establish stronger links between industries and educational institutions in Bangladesh, following China’s model,” he said.
Milan said the government had identified several weaknesses in the technical education sector and was reviewing the gaps to develop solutions. The focus, he said, would be on creating an integrated system connecting institutions, training, curricula and industry demand.
He said China’s technical education system integrates curricula, modern laboratories, teachers and practical training around the needs of industries.
The minister also acknowledged a longstanding shortage of teachers in technical education institutions, saying recruitment to thousands of vacant posts was being coordinated through the regular process.
He said the government was also discussing with China how Bangladesh could help meet the growing demand for skilled workers from Chinese companies operating globally.
On language training, Milan said there would be no single language requirement across the technical education system. Instead, language training would be tailored to industry demand—for example, Japanese in areas with significant Japanese investment and relevant languages where South Korean or Arab companies have a strong presence.
Technical and Madrasa Education Division Secretary Daud Mia said initiatives were underway to modernise Bangladesh’s technical education system based on China’s vocational education and training model.
As part of the initiative, plans are being developed to establish a technical teacher training academy in Gazipur and a technical training centre in Mirsarai, Chattogram.
