The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) and Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) on Monday jointly conducted an eviction drive at Haji’s Mazar slum in Tongi, a known drug hotspot, demolishing illegal structures and reclaiming a Rajuk-owned plot occupied unlawfully for years.
The operation began around 11:30am near the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments in Tongi Bazar.
Led by a Rajuk executive magistrate, the drive involved excavators, payloaders and a large number of workers, while a heavy police presence was deployed to maintain order.
Rajuk Deputy Director (Estate and Land-3) Md Liton Sarker supervised the eviction, while GMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Md Belayet Hossain oversaw security arrangements.
Locals said the Haji’s Mazar area had long been a major centre for drug trading despite repeated raids by police, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and other law enforcement agencies.
Belayet Hossain said the authorities would maintain a strict stance against drugs, describing such operations as an effective step toward freeing Tongi from drug-related activities and reclaiming government land.
Liton Sarker said the Rajuk plot had been occupied illegally for a long period. With administrative support, the illegal structures were demolished and the land was brought back under Rajuk’s control.
Authorities said the reclaimed plot would remain under continuous surveillance to prevent reoccupation, reconstruction of illegal structures or the emergence of another drug hotspot.
