A court in Cumilla has sentenced a husband and wife to life imprisonment for the murder of a woman in Chandina over a land dispute.
The court also fined each convict Tk10,000, with an additional two months of simple imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine. Another accused was acquitted as the charges against her could not be proven.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of the First Court in Cumilla, Mithila Islam, delivered the verdict on Monday (August 31).
The convicts are Samir Chandra Das, 42, son of the late Kshitish Das, and his wife Rupali Rani Das, 37, both from Barai Para in Mahichail, Chandina. The third accused, Bakul Rani Das, was acquitted.
According to the case details, an argument broke out on the morning of January 10, 2018, between the accused and Ranjit Chandra Das and his wife, Shilpi Rani Das, over a land dispute in Mahichail.
At one point, Samir, Rupali and Bakul allegedly attacked the couple with sharp machetes, seriously injuring both. Locals rescued them and took them to Chandina Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Shilpi Rani Das dead.
Following the incident, Nitai Chandra Das, the deceased’s brother-in-law, filed a murder case with Chandina Police Station against the three accused.
Police Sub-Inspector Md Shahjahan, the investigating officer, submitted the charge sheet to the court on August 18, 2018, after completing the investigation.
After a lengthy hearing and examination of witnesses and evidence, the court found Samir and Rupali guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Md Ismail Mia Ratan said the prosecution examined 18 witnesses during the trial. The court reached its verdict after reviewing the evidence and confessional statements.
The two convicts were not present in court when the verdict was delivered.
