Nepal has requested urgent assistance from the UN’s Loss and Damage Fund following a devastating disaster that caused deaths, displacement and extensive damage to homes and critical infrastructure.
The fund was established at the UN climate conference COP27 in 2022 and became operational at COP28.
In a joint letter, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle and Forests and Agriculture Minister Geeta Chaudhary urged an immediate international response, saying the disaster had caused significant economic and non-economic losses.
Although a full assessment is still underway, preliminary findings suggest the scale of destruction is extensive and beyond Nepal’s immediate capacity to respond.
India has long advocated climate equity, arguing that countries’ responsibilities should reflect differences in historical emissions, development needs and national capacities.
New Delhi has also backed international efforts to address climate-related loss and damage and called for greater financial support from developed countries for vulnerable developing nations.
