The body of Indian national Gautam Mistry, 55, who died at Bangladesh’s Benapole land port on Wednesday, was handed over to his family and repatriated to India on Friday after the completion of necessary formalities.
The body was handed over through the Benapole checkpost at around 11am after the required immigration procedures and clearance from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
Gautam, a resident of Kalyannagar Suraiya Sen Palli in Kolkata and son of Ramani Mistry, had travelled to Bangladesh about two weeks ago to visit his in-laws in Barishal.
He suffered a stroke while returning to India through the Benapole checkpost on Wednesday. His wife, Jahanara Mistry, said he suddenly fell ill after getting out of their vehicle. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
As the death occurred in Bangladesh, the family had to complete several legal procedures before taking the body to India.
These included obtaining a death certificate from the hospital, a general diary (GD) from the local police station and clearance from the Indian High Commission.
Jahanara thanked people in Bangladesh for providing financial assistance and other support during the difficult period.
Benapole Immigration Police Officer-in-Charge Saifur Rahman confirmed that the body was handed over around 11am after the necessary embassy clearance was secured.
Gautam’s wife subsequently crossed into India with her husband’s body, he added.
