The High Court has upheld the death sentences of two of seven convicts in the murder of shrine caretaker Rahmat Ali in Rangpur, while acquitting the other five.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Sathika Hossain delivered the verdict on Sunday.
Senior lawyer SM Shahjahan represented the convicts in court.
The two convicts whose death sentences were upheld are JMB commander Masud Rana and Liton Mia.
The five acquitted by the High Court are JMB members Ichahak Ali, Sakhawat Hossain alias Rahul, Sarwar Hossain Sabu alias Mizan, Bijoy alias Ali alias Dorji, the outfit’s northern region commander, and Chandu Mia.
Rahmat Ali, 60, was hacked and his throat was slit on the night of November 10, 2015, at Chaitar Mor in Madhupur Union of Kaunia upazila while he was returning home.
The following day, his son Shafiqul Islam filed a murder case with Kaunia Police Station.
On March 18, 2018, the Rangpur Special Judge’s Court, headed by Judge Naresh Chandra Sarker, sentenced all seven accused to death after trial and acquitted six others.
The seven convicts were Masud Rana alias Mamun alias Minister, Liton Mia alias Rafiq, Ichahak Ali, Sakhawat Hossain alias Rahul, Sarwar Hossain Sabu alias Mizan, Bijoy alias Ali alias Dorji, and Chandu Mia.
