A High Court bench has granted bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, in two cases filed in Chattogram.
The bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order on Sunday (6 September).
Chinmoy Das was represented in court by lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, who said the two cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram on 26 November 2024 over allegations of obstructing police duties and vandalism.
The High Court granted bail after issuing and disposing of rules in the two cases.
However, Chinmoy Das will not be released immediately as he is facing several other cases, his lawyer said.
Earlier, on 31 October 2024, Firoz Khan, general secretary of the BNP in Chattogram’s Chandgaon-Mohra ward, filed a sedition case against Chinmoy Krishna Das and 18 others with Kotwali Police Station. Chinmoy and several others were later arrested in the case.
Following the rejection of Chinmoy’s bail petition in the sedition case, his supporters allegedly created a disturbance, triggering a clash on the Chattogram court premises on 26 November last year.
During the clash, lawyer Saiful Islam was beaten and hacked to death. Nearly two dozen people have since been arrested over their alleged involvement in the killing, while several other cases were filed in connection with the incident.
