Google South Asia Policy Head Kyle Gardner met Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Major General Md Emad Ul Bari (retd) at the commission’s headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday.
During the meeting, they discussed expanding Google’s services in Bangladesh, introducing local payment systems and developing digital infrastructure. They also stressed the need for closer coordination between Google and the BTRC.
The BTRC urged Google to consider establishing a local office and exploring initiatives such as an AI model lab, AI training for Bangladeshi engineers, and dedicated support for startups and innovation.
The regulator also called for stronger measures to detect and remove harmful content from Google platforms, including promotions of illegal betting and gambling. It suggested using AI-based systems to automatically identify and remove such content.
Gardner welcomed the proposals and expressed Google’s interest in exploring potential areas of cooperation. He also said the company would seek to work more closely with the BTRC and relevant government ministries, while noting that some constraints currently remain over establishing a local office in Bangladesh.
