Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain, 58, of the Special Branch of police was beaten to death in Savar’s Aminbazar after he protested the assault of an autorickshaw garage owner, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said.
Eight people have so far been arrested in connection with the killing.RAB disclosed the information at a press briefing at its media centre in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, on Monday (September 7).
The incident took place on the night of September 5 in the Bordeshi area of Aminbazar.
According to RAB, a private car driver and several associates were assaulting the garage owner over a dispute concerning the parking of an autorickshaw. SI Altaf intervened and protested the assault.
An argument then broke out between Altaf and his son Ariful on one side and the attackers on the other. The situation escalated when the assailants became enraged.
As the attackers grew more aggressive, Altaf identified himself as a police officer. However, this reportedly further angered them. Fearing for their lives, Altaf and his son ran into Ariful’s garment factory for shelter.
The attackers followed them there, allegedly calling in another 15 to 20 associates. They reportedly broke through the factory gate and attacked Altaf and Ariful with sticks and locally made weapons. Factory machinery and furniture were also vandalised during the assault.
Locals later rescued the severely injured father and son and took them to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, where doctors declared Altaf dead.
Following the incident, Altaf’s wife filed a murder case with Savar Model Police Station, naming 15 people and several unidentified suspects.
RAB subsequently stepped up intelligence surveillance to arrest those involved.
A RAB-10 team arrested four named accused—Alauddin, 26, Apon, 30, Jihad, 20, and Imran, 26—from the launch terminal area under Munshiganj Sadar Police Station around 7:30pm on September 6, within 24 hours of the killing.
RAB said Apon is also accused in three drug cases filed with Savar Police Station.
Separately, a RAB-4 team arrested four more named accused from the Aminbazar area of Savar with the help of information technology and intelligence.
They were identified as Nur Mohammad Rudra, 24, Md Rakib Mia, 28, Sabbir Ahmed, 24, and Md Wasim, 40.
