A former sub-divisional engineer of the Food and Disaster Management Ministry’s bridge project has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife by slitting her throat.
The court also fined him Tk10,000, with two more years in prison in default.
The manager of a residential hotel was sentenced to five years in jail for helping destroy evidence of the murder. He was also fined Tk2,000, with an additional four months in prison in default.
Judge Mostak Ahmed of the Barishal Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict on Monday, said Public Prosecutor Mohsin Montu.
The convicts, engineer Zahirul Islam of Baufal upazila in Patuakhali, and hotel assistant manager Abdul Malek, were present in court when the verdict was announced.
According to the case documents, Zahirul brought his wife, Nazma Zahir Shova, to Barishal in 2010 while working on a bridge project of the Food and Disaster Management Ministry. The couple stayed in a VIP cabin on the fifth floor of Hotel Ali.
On February 15, 2010, police recovered Shova’s throat-slit body from the hotel room.
Her sister, Nilufar Ireen Jumu, filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Police Station the following day, initially accusing unknown people.
Police submitted a charge sheet against two people on February 14, 2019. After recording statements from 13 witnesses, the court delivered the verdict.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Md Anwar Hossain Mizan, said they were satisfied with the verdict.
