Meherpur district Awami League general secretary and former upazila chairman MA Khalek was arrested at the Darshana International Immigration Checkpost in Chuadanga on Thursday while attempting to travel to India for medical treatment.
Khalek went to the immigration checkpoint in the morning with a medical visa. Immigration officials became suspicious while checking his documents and sought information about him from intelligence agencies.
They later found that several cases had been filed against him. He was subsequently shown arrested in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) police from Gangni later took him towards Gangni in Meherpur.
Darshana immigration checkpoint Sub-Inspector Tariq said Khalek came under suspicion after officials found a case filed against him under the Special Powers Act. A subsequent inquiry through intelligence agencies confirmed that he was facing multiple cases, he said.
Police said the case was filed with Gangni Police Station on April 13, 2025, under Sections 15(3) and 25D of the Special Powers Act, 1974. He was shown arrested in the case, registered as Case No. 15.
Khalek’s son, Asif Reza, said his father had been suffering from illness for a long time and had a blockage in his heart. He said Khalek was being taken to India for bypass surgery.
Asif also claimed that his father had secured bail in all the cases filed against him.
