Six people were arrested in the capital’s Shahbagh area for allegedly posing as members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police and preparing to carry out a robbery.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch recovered a toy pistol, a toy magazine, a walkie-talkie, handcuffs and two jackets bearing the DB insignia from their possession.
The arrestees were identified as Juel Mridha, 38, Md Ramiz Talukdar, 36, Jasim Talukdar alias Riaz, 46, Md Rahman Howladar, 39, Md Billal, 32, and Md Maruf, 38.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Md Aktar Hossain disclosed the information on Thursday.
He said a DB team received a tip-off around 10:20pm Tuesday that several people wearing fake DB uniforms were gathering beneath the metro rail station opposite BIRDEM Hospital in Shahbagh with plans to commit a robbery.
The team later conducted a raid at the spot and arrested the six suspects.
During the operation, police seized the toy pistol, toy magazine, walkie-talkie, handcuffs and two jackets marked “DB.”
According to the DMP official, preliminary interrogation suggested that the suspects had allegedly been using fake DB identities and clothing for a long time to hold people hostage and commit robberies at different locations in the capital.
A case has been filed against the arrestees with Shahbagh Police Station, and they were subsequently produced before a court.
