An unidentified woman died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after being found unconscious on a staircase at Banlata Kacha Bazar near New Market Police Station in the capital.
The incident occurred around midnight on Friday.
New Market Police Station Sub-Inspector Sagar Saha said police went to the spot after receiving information and found the woman lying unconscious on the staircase.
She was rescued and taken to the DMCH emergency department, where an on-duty doctor declared her dead around 5am.
According to local residents, the woman appeared to be a vagrant and had been living in the area. Her identity has yet to be established, the police officer said.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
