The funeral prayers of Ishayat Shahriar Opritom, son of Cumilla University Bengali Department Associate Professor Nahida Begum, were held in Cumilla on Sunday amid a large turnout.

The first janaza was held at the university’s central field around 10am, followed by a second prayer at Gandhamati Eidgah ground near his home at 11am.

A large number of university teachers, students and local residents attended the prayers. The area was filled with grief as relatives mourned the death of the seventh-grade student.

Opritom was a student at Cumilla Border Guard Public School.

He went missing on Friday afternoon after leaving his rented home in the Kotbari area with his mother’s iPhone, telling his family that he was going out with friends to take photographs. He did not return home, prompting his father, KM Firoz Shahriar, to file a general diary with Sadar Dakshin Police Station.

His body was recovered around 1pm on Saturday from an isolated forest in Lalmai Hills in Sananda village of Bijoypur Union, Cumilla Sadar Dakshin.

Police said there were signs of injury to his head. However, his mother’s iPhone was not found with the body.

Police said the body was handed over to the family after an autopsy at Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Saturday night.

Three people have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the killing. Police are scheduled to provide details at a press conference at noon on Sunday.
