Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained a data entry operator of the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office while he was allegedly attempting to cross into India through the Sreemangal border in Moulvibazar.
A patrol team of Gutibari Border Outpost under Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) detained Sushanta Chandra Biswas, 34, in the Monglambasti area around 6:30pm Sunday during a routine operation to prevent illegal border crossings.
According to a BGB press release issued Monday, he was detained near border pillar No. 1939/M while allegedly trying to cross the zero line into India.
Sushanta, a resident of Sachail village in Tarail upazila of Kishoreganj, has been working at the Election Office since 2016 and is currently posted as a data entry operator at the Jamalganj Upazila Election Office, the release said.
BGB said he had been absent from work without authorised leave for about a month and authorities had been looking for him.
During preliminary questioning, Sushanta reportedly told BGB that he arrived in Sreemangal on Thursday and stayed at a hotel before allegedly attempting to cross into India with the help of a broker.
BGB said two mobile phones, two National Identity (NID) cards, six other identification documents, an official seal, Tk12,185 in cash and personal belongings were recovered from him.
The border force said the recovered documents, digital data and other materials are being examined by the relevant authorities.
