Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for stronger international support to create conditions for the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas forcibly displaced from Myanmar and sheltered in Bangladesh.
He also stressed the need for coordinated international efforts to find a lasting and sustainable solution to the protracted Rohingya crisis.
The prime minister made the call during a courtesy meeting with Julie Bishop, the UN secretary-general’s special envoy on Myanmar, at his residence at the Hyatt Grand Central Hotel in New York on Tuesday (Sept 22).
Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon confirmed the meeting.
The discussions focused on the international community’s role in finding a long-term and sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis. Tarique said international cooperation was essential to create a safe and conducive environment for the Rohingyas to return to their homeland.
The meeting also highlighted the need for coordinated international initiatives to address the root causes of the crisis and ensure a lasting solution.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to attend a high-level special event on the Rohingya crisis on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly on Wednesday (Sept 23).
Titled “The Rohingya Crisis: A Renewed Call for a Durable Solution from Protracted Displacement, with Justice and Accountability,” the event is being jointly organised by Bangladesh and The Gambia, with the European Union as a co-host.
The event is expected to discuss sustained humanitarian assistance for the Rohingyas, strengthening justice and accountability, and creating conditions in Myanmar for their safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation.
According to the United Nations, the Rohingya crisis became a protracted humanitarian emergency following the mass displacement of Rohingyas from Myanmar’s Rakhine State in 2017. The UN has continued to call for greater international support to protect the Rohingyas, maintain humanitarian assistance and address the root causes of the crisis.
Tarique is currently in New York to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. He is scheduled to address the general debate on Sept 24.
During his visit, he is also scheduled to attend meetings on climate change, sea-level rise and a range of bilateral and multilateral issues.
