Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday for a state visit to the United States at the invitation of US President Donald Trump.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were warmly received by Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, in a rare planeside welcome.
American children presented flowers to Xi and Peng, while honor guards lined both sides of a red carpet. The welcoming ceremony included a 21-gun salute, the national anthems of China and the United States, and a military flyover.
In a written speech, Xi extended greetings and best wishes to the American people on behalf of the Chinese people.
“China and the United States should be partners, not rivals,” Xi said, adding that China’s national rejuvenation and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” vision can go hand in hand.
Xi said the two countries should work in the same direction and promote a stable relationship based on cooperation, moderate competition and manageable differences.
He recalled that he and Trump had agreed during Trump’s visit to China in May to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability, which he said had provided guidance for the future development of bilateral ties.
Xi said the two countries should find the right way to coexist in the new era, while noting that the historical logic of peaceful coexistence and the friendly ties between their peoples had not changed.
He said he looked forward to in-depth discussions with Trump on bilateral relations and major global issues, as well as expanding cooperation in various fields.
Xi also expressed hope that the visit would be fruitful, improve the well-being of both peoples and contribute to world peace.
On his way from the airport to his hotel, overseas Chinese and students gathered along the route, waving Chinese and US flags to welcome the visiting president.
