Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will launch a special citywide cleanliness and mosquito-control campaign across all 75 wards on Saturday, September 26, as part of efforts to curb the spread of dengue.
Dubbed “Weekly Cleaning Day,” the campaign will continue every Saturday for the next three months under the leadership of regional executive officers, as part of a nationwide three-month dengue prevention programme.
According to DSCC’s Pre-Monsoon Survey 2026, the highest prevalence of Aedes mosquito larvae was found in multi-storey buildings (35.23%), followed by individual houses (27.76%) and under-construction buildings (17.44%). Stagnant water in drums, buckets and other containers was also identified as a major breeding source.
Experts say controlling Aedes mosquitoes cannot be achieved by city authorities alone, as many breeding sites are found inside homes and private premises.
Alongside mosquito-control measures, public awareness and regular removal of stagnant water are therefore considered essential to dengue prevention.
From Saturday morning, DSCC teams will conduct larviciding and adulticiding operations in residential areas, roads, drains, rooftops and construction sites across the 75 wards.
They will also remove stagnant water and abandoned waste that could serve as mosquito breeding grounds.
Rallies and leaflet-distribution programmes will also be organised in the wards to raise public awareness. DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md. Abdus Salam is scheduled to inspect the campaign activities on the ground.
The city corporation has urged residents to actively participate by keeping their homes and surrounding areas clean and eliminating potential Aedes breeding sites.
