A 17-year-old girl who suffered severe burns in a fire following a family dispute in the capital’s Sutrapur area has died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, raising the death toll to three.
The deceased was identified as Tania Akter, who had suffered burns to around 60 percent of her body. She died at the hospital’s ICU around 6:45pm on Friday, said Dr Sultan Mahmud, a resident medical officer at the institute.
The incident occurred on September 19 at Shyambazar Chamartuli when Mohammad Emon, a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Saudi Arabia, allegedly poured petrol over himself and set himself on fire following a family dispute. Four other family members were also injured in the incident.
Emon, who suffered 90 percent burns, died at the same hospital on September 20. Another victim, Siddique Bepari, 60, died on Thursday after suffering 35 percent burns.
The other injured victims were Siddique’s nephews Rajib, 38, a mechanic at National Hospital, and Arifur Rahman Dhalu, 35, an electrician. They were receiving treatment at the burn institute.
According to Sonia Akter, wife of Arifur, an argument broke out between Emon’s sister Sultana and Tania over stagnant dirty water in front of their houses. Tania had asked Sultana to clean the water, after which Sultana informed her brother.
Sonia said Emon returned home after learning about the dispute and allegedly threatened to kill everyone and himself before pouring petrol inside his room and setting himself on fire.
All the victims lived in adjacent houses on their ancestral property in the area.
