Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan Monday said 29 canals under the jurisdiction of the DNCC will be freed from illegal occupation following the Prime Minister’s directive.
“Due to indiscriminate waste dumping and illegal encroachment over the past 17 years, most of the capital’s canals have been filled up and clutched by encroachers. DNCC would gradually reclaim all 29 canals under its jurisdiction,” he said.
The DNCC administrator made the announcement while inaugurating a tree plantation programme at the Mirpur-10 Adarsha High School ground Monday.
He noted that it would be impossible to save Dhaka city without recovering the occupied canals.
“No matter what obstacles arise, they will be overcome,” he said.
DNCC is implementing a programme to plant 500,000 trees in line with the Prime Minister’s announcement and today’s tree plantation programme is a part of the initiative, he said.
