Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam was sent to jail on Monday after completing eight days of remand in two phases in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam’s suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after a hearing, rejecting the MP’s bail petition.
Police Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the DB Tejgaon zonal team, who is also the investigation officer in the case, sought Nazrul’s detention after the remand period ended. Defence lawyer Mahbubul Islam sought bail for the lawmaker.
Mariam, 19, was found hanging inside Flat 203 of NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on September 20.
The following day, her father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case against Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman.
Police arrested Nazrul and Maksuda that night.
