A Bangladeshi worker died after being struck by lightning while working at a palm oil plantation in Malaysia on Monday evening.
The deceased was identified as Md Hiron Mia, 40, from Monkashair village in Kharera union of Kasba upazila, Brahmanbaria.
Hiron had gone to Malaysia three years ago after taking on debt to support his family. He had been working as a labourer at a palm oil plantation.
His elder brother, Md Khokon Mia, said Hiron was struck by lightning while working at the plantation on Monday evening. His co-workers rescued him and informed the family.
The co-workers are now taking steps to bring his body back to Bangladesh, Khokon said.
Former union parishad member Babul Mia said Hiron had gone abroad after taking on substantial debt and had been struggling to support his family. The family had also recently lost Hiron’s younger daughter, Niha Moni, he said.
Hiron was the youngest of four brothers and had worked as a tree cutter in Bangladesh before going abroad. He is survived by a son and two daughters.
His son Ikram Hossain Amir is a Class 10 student, while his daughters Himu Akter and Rimu Akter are in Classes 6 and 3 respectively.
News of Hiron’s death left his wife, Happy Akter, devastated. His 75-year-old mother, Jahanara Begum, repeatedly collapsed in grief after learning of her son’s death, leaving the family and neighbours in mourning.
