Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Tuesday appointed Urban Planning Minister Fatima Zahra Mansouri as the country’s prime minister, making her the first woman to hold the post.
Mansouri, who also serves as mayor of Marrakech, has been tasked with forming a new government, the Royal Palace said in a statement.
She is expected to begin coalition-building in the coming days.
The new government is expected to oversee billions of dollars in investments related to preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while also pursuing measures to address inflation, increase wages and create jobs.
Mansouri’s appointment marks a milestone for women’s political representation in Morocco, as she becomes the first woman to serve as head of government in the country.
