A retired female schoolteacher was found dead with her hands and feet tied at a rented house in Barishal city early Thursday.

The body of Amena Khanam, 65, was recovered from the house in the Khalpar area of Bhatikhana Rokeya Azim Road around 4:30am, police said.

Amena, a resident of Mehendiganj upazila, was a retired primary school teacher. She had been living alone in the rented house in Kaunia. Her son, Rifat, works for a private bank in Dhaka.

House owner Rina Begum said Amena had rented the second floor of the house about a year ago and lived there alone.

She said Rifat was informed after a foul smell started coming from the rented room late Wednesday night. Police were subsequently notified and recovered the body early Thursday.

Barishal Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sushanta Sarker said police went to the house after receiving a phone call from Amena’s son and found the door locked.

“After opening the door and entering the house, police found Amena Khanam’s body lying on the bed with her hands and feet tied with cloth,” he said.

The body was sent to the morgue of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the police official said.

“Efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the incident,” he added.
