Heavy rainfall has caused water levels to rise in the Surma, Rakti, Jadukata, Bolai and other rivers in Sunamganj.
As of Thursday (July 9) morning, no river had crossed the danger level. However, the Surma River’s water level has risen by 51 centimetres. According to the Sunamganj Water Development Board, 265 mm of rainfall was recorded in the district in the 24 hours until 9:00 am on Thursday.
The Surma River was flowing 60 centimetres below the danger mark at the Solaghar point in Sunamganj town. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over the next two days in Sunamganj and India’s Meghalaya state, followed by moderate to heavy rain for another two days. If the rain continues, water levels at some locations may exceed the danger mark, triggering temporary flooding.
Executive Engineer-2 of the Sunamganj Water Development Board, Md Emdadul Haque, said weather forecasts indicate very heavy rainfall will continue in Sunamganj and Meghalaya for the next two days. While the Surma and other rivers are still flowing below the danger level, continued rainfall could push water levels above the danger mark, raising the risk of short-term flooding.
