Mission Acharya, a resident of Kalabagan in Jhenaidah town, has seen his dream of becoming a primary school teacher put on hold despite being recommended for appointment after completing his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Islamic University.

Mission said he was among 182 candidates recommended for appointment as assistant teachers in primary schools. Of them, 180 have received appointment letters, while he and another candidate have not.

According to Mission, the other candidate is facing a legal case, while his appointment has been withheld over the absence of a permanent residential address.

“I live with my family in a rented house in Kalabagan. My mother, Moyna Acharya, worked as a domestic helper to support my education,” Mission said. “I provided our rented address in my job application because we do not own a homestead.”

Mission said his father, Nanda Acharya, was originally from Jashore but left the family when his mother was pregnant with him and never returned. His mother subsequently raised the two sons alone by working in other people’s homes.

Despite financial hardship, Mission completed his Secondary School Certificate examination with a GPA of 5 and his Higher Secondary Certificate examination with a GPA of 4.83. He later graduated and completed a postgraduate degree in Finance and Banking from Islamic University.

He said his National Identity Card and educational certificates carry the Kalabagan address, where his family has lived for years. Police verification was also conducted at the rented residence after he was recommended for the post.

“Yet I was told that no permanent address could be found during the verification process, and that is why I have not been given the appointment letter,” he said.

Mission’s maternal grandfather’s home is in Panditpur village of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila. In 2022, his maternal uncle, Bishnupada Biswas, gave him two decimals of land there so that he could build a homestead. However, he has not been able to construct a house due to financial constraints.

He had hoped to build a home there after securing the teaching job and settle there with his family.

Mission said he has approached the District Primary Education Office, the district administration and other government offices seeking a resolution.

Jhenaidah District Primary Education Officer Md Amzad Hossain said Mission and his friends had submitted a complaint and that the matter had been taken up with the Directorate of Primary Education.

“We have informed the Directorate of Primary Education about the issue. We hope the matter will be resolved soon,” he said.

Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain said a complication had arisen over Mission’s permanent address.

“I have spoken with Mission about the matter. His application has been forwarded to the concerned department of the Directorate of Primary Education,” he said, expressing hope that the issue would be resolved as soon as possible.
