A college student was stabbed to death allegedly over a trivial matter in Satkhira district town on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Zakaria Khan, 19, son of Abdul Gafur Khan of Katia area. He had appeared for this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination from Satkhira Government College.

Shahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said Zakaria was sitting at a tea stall near the Livestock Office intersection with several others at around 11:30pm.

At one point, a group of youths got into an argument with the tea-stall owner, which soon turned into a scuffle.

When Zakaria tried to intervene and protect the shop owner, the youths allegedly stabbed him with a knife, leaving him critically injured.

He was rushed to Satkhira Medical College and Hospital, where he died at around 12:30am.

Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify those involved in the attack, the OC said.
