Police have arrested three people for allegedly posing as members of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and demanding Tk10 lakh from a man in Uttara, Dhaka.
The arrested are Md Russell Mahbub alias Masum, 42, Sohel Mirza, 41, and Md Sajib, 36.
Police said they were arrested during a raid on a 10th-floor flat on Road 3 in Sector 4 of Uttara at around 8am on Friday (October 2).
According to police, the suspects threatened the victim, Kaiyum Shahriar Zahedi, claiming that a case had been filed against him. They allegedly identified themselves as DGFI members and demanded Tk10 lakh to settle the purported case.
Fearing the consequences, Zahedi allegedly paid them Tk1.59 lakh. He later became suspicious of their activities and sought police assistance by calling the national emergency helpline 999.
Police recovered a fake DGFI identity card, Tk1.59 lakh in cash, a Suzuki Gixxer motorcycle, a walkie-talkie and a pair of handcuffs from the suspects.
Md Akhtar Hossain, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media and Public Relations Division, said officers found a DGFI identity card at the scene and became suspicious after examining it.
The suspects later confessed during interrogation to allegedly extorting money while posing as DGFI members, he said.
A case has been filed with Uttara East Police Station over the incident.
