Italian customs officials and law enforcement agencies have seized 28kg of silver and valuable jewellery at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, with the items estimated to be worth more than €36,000.

A case report has been submitted to judicial authorities against a Bangladeshi national in connection with the seizure.

The incident took place on Friday (October 2) at Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino, Rome.

According to local authorities, the Bangladeshi passenger was travelling to Dhaka with a layover in Istanbul. Acting on a tip-off, customs officials from the Fiumicino Group and members of the Rome Provincial Command of Italy’s financial police, the Guardia di Finanza, placed him under surveillance before carrying out a search.

Initially, four checked bags belonging to the passenger were scanned. After irregularities were detected, the bags were opened and searched.

Officials found large quantities of silver and valuable jewellery carefully concealed in multiple plastic packages inside the luggage.

According to the Guardia di Finanza, the passenger failed to provide documents proving the legitimate origin of the silver or the permits required to transport it across the border.

A report has been submitted to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and judicial authorities on suspicion of the illegal or illicit transportation of goods.

The passenger was not immediately arrested or detained. The seized 28kg of silver has been placed in state custody as evidence under orders from the judicial authorities.
