Police have arrested a death-row convict in a teenage girl murder case in Dhaka after he remained in hiding for 14 years.
The convict, identified as Md Imon Hossain, 45, was arrested during a raid in the Pubail area of Gazipur on Saturday morning, police said.
He was produced before a court on Sunday morning after completion of the necessary legal procedures, according to Biral police.
Imon, son of Md Habibur Rahman alias Babu of Jagatpur Mahajanpara in Biral upazila of Dinajpur, was the prime accused in a murder case filed with South Khan Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara division on September 25, 2012.
According to the case, a teenage girl was allegedly killed by slitting her throat.
Following the trial, a court sentenced Imon to death. As he remained absconding for years, a warrant was issued for execution of the death sentence and later sent to Biral Police Station as his permanent address is in the upazila.
Police said they traced Imon’s whereabouts with the help of information technology and intelligence and subsequently arrested him in Pubail.
Biral Police Station Officer-in-Charge Al Emran said Imon had been in hiding for a long time and was arrested based on intelligence and technological assistance.
He was later produced before the court following due legal procedures, the OC added.
