Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for a more adaptive, technology-driven and future-ready United Nations Police to effectively address evolving global security challenges.
“Tomorrow’s security challenges cannot be addressed with yesterday’s capabilities,” he said while addressing the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, according to a press release received on Thursday.
The minister said increasingly sophisticated and transnational criminal networks require innovative approaches, highly skilled personnel and stronger international cooperation.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s long-standing contribution to UN peacekeeping operations, he said the country has undertaken significant reforms to better prepare its police force for emerging security challenges.
Salahuddin proposed establishing a UN Police Knowledge and Innovation Network to promote the systematic exchange of expertise, best practices and professional knowledge among UN member states.
Describing climate change as a growing security threat, he also proposed an annual Conference on Environment and Policing to strengthen international cooperation, preparedness and knowledge-sharing on climate-related security risks.
He said enhancing the capacity of UN Police through innovation, specialised expertise and modern technology would be essential to ensuring effective peacekeeping operations in an increasingly complex global security environment.
