At least 25 villages in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar have been flooded after two sections of the Dhalai River embankment collapsed amid heavy rainfall and upstream surges.
The breaches occurred on Wednesday night at Mokabil and early Thursday at Ganganagar in Islampur union, allowing floodwaters to rush into nearby localities.
As a result, 12 villages in Islampur union and 10 more in adjoining Adampur union have been inundated, leaving several thousand residents stranded.
According to local officials, the river was flowing 33 centimetres above the danger level as of 9:00am on Thursday, driven by continuous rainfall and hill runoff.
In Islampur union, villages including Bhandarigaon, Ganganagar, Sripur, Mokabil, Konagaon and Berigaon have gone under water.
Croplands have been submerged under 3 to 4 feet of water, while ponds and fish enclosures have been washed away.
Upstream flooding has also affected parts of Adampur union, including West Ghoramara, Bandergaon, Bhanubil, Uttarbhag and Jalalpur, said Union Parishad Chairman Abdal Hossain.
Many residents have taken shelter on higher ground as floodwaters continue to rise.
A secondary school and three primary schools have been submerged, prompting authorities to declare a temporary closure of those institutions.
Kamalganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Asaduzzaman visited the affected areas on Thursday morning along with local officials. “Adequate relief supplies are available, and distribution among flood-hit people has already begun,” he said.
