At least 50 children have fallen ill with infections and bleeding after undergoing circumcision on St Martin’s Island in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
A three-member medical team from Teknaf Upazila Health Complex was sent to the island to provide treatment and investigate the cause of the illnesses.
The team reached St Martin’s on Wednesday morning. It will examine the affected children, provide necessary medical care and assess the possible reasons behind their complications.
Dr Enamul Haque, resident medical officer of Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, said the team comprises a specialist physician, an anaesthesiologist and a sub-assistant medical officer.
“The medical team will examine the affected children and provide the necessary treatment. It will also investigate the actual cause of their illnesses,” he said.
According to local and hospital sources, a medical team from Mymensingh-based Al Mughis Hospital organised a free medical camp and circumcision programme on October 4 at St Martin’s Holiday Resort under the initiative of Al Momin Samaj Kalyan Foundation.
At least 50 children who underwent circumcision during the two-day programme later sought treatment at St Martin’s Hospital with infections and bleeding, the sources said.
Following the incident, the medical team was sent from Teknaf to treat the affected children. Authorities are also investigating the cause of the complications and whether there were any lapses in the circumcision procedure or treatment.
The children’s current condition and further treatment details will be known after the medical team completes its examinations.
