At least 14 people were killed in two separate shooting incidents in the United States within hours of each other, local police said.

Five people were found shot dead at a house in Douglas, Georgia, on Friday evening, according to the Douglas Police Department.

Officers rushed to the scene late Friday after receiving reports of gunfire. The five victims were found with gunshot wounds and were later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

In a separate incident in Erie, Pennsylvania, nine people, including two children and a pregnant woman, were killed in what authorities described as a tragic mass shooting.

Erie city officials said all nine deaths, including that of the suspected shooter, occurred before police arrived at the scene. No further shots were fired afterward.

Authorities were alerted to the incident through ShotSpotter, a controversial gunshot detection system that uses a network of microphones and artificial intelligence to identify potential gunfire.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on social media that he had spoken with Erie Mayor Devlin and pledged full support from his administration following the tragedy.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lora described the scene as one of the most difficult he had encountered in his career.

“The loss of life is deeply painful, and the circumstances we are dealing with are profoundly tragic,” he said in a statement, adding that investigators had yet to determine the motive.

Lora told a local television station that he had never witnessed anything like it in more than 28 years of professional service.

“I don’t know if the city of Erie has ever faced the loss of life and devastation that we have just witnessed,” he said.
