Bangladesh is formulating a National Port Strategy to protect national interests, accelerate economic growth and expand international trade, Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said on Sunday.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Ministry of Shipping in Dhaka, the minister stressed the need for stronger coordination, greater operational efficiency and improved management of the country’s seaports, river ports and land ports.

He said the strategy should incorporate the views of relevant ministries, government agencies, port authorities, businesses, importers, exporters and experts, with national economic interests taking priority.

As Bangladesh’s economy and international trade continue to grow, expanding port capacity, modernising operations and improving coordination among authorities have become increasingly important, he added.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is supporting the formulation of the strategy. The minister expressed hope that contributions from local and international experts would help produce a practical and effective policy framework.

Noting that different authorities manage the country’s ports, Shaikh Rabiul Alam said a balanced approach was essential. Prioritising the interests of any single group over others, he warned, could undermine the strategy’s objectives.

He also highlighted opportunities to attract foreign investment and expertise into the port sector. Initiatives have already been taken to involve international companies in container handling and terminal management at various ports.

The minister said Bangladesh could improve port performance by drawing on the experience of leading international terminal operators, supported by integrated policies and long-term planning.

He emphasised the need for better coordination across port development, terminal operations, cargo handling, transport connectivity, customs procedures and related services.

Ensuring business-friendly services that meet international standards would help make Bangladeshi ports more competitive and better equipped to handle growing trade, he said.

State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan also attended the seminar.
