DHAKA: The residence of Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader in Uttara, Dhaka, came under attack and was vandalised on Monday around 11:30am.
Shourya Dipta Surya, press secretary to the Jatiya Party chairman, said around 150 miscreants attacked Quader’s residence in Sector 7 of Uttara. “We have informed the police, and they have arrived at the scene,” he said.
Mohammad Khalid Mansur, officer-in-charge of Uttara West Police Station, told the media that police personnel were immediately dispatched after receiving information about the incident. However, no attackers were found at the scene. Bricks and stones had been thrown at the residence from outside, he said, adding that an investigation was underway to identify those involved.
Rezaul Karim, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara Division, also confirmed the incident to the media. He said police reached the scene after receiving reports of the attack, but the assailants had already fled. Efforts were underway to identify those responsible, he added.
Earlier, a group of protesters staged a procession and sit-in outside GM Quader’s residence, demanding his arrest. They accused him of betraying the martyrs of the July uprising and colluding with the ousted government.
The demonstration was organised under the banner of “Anti-Autocracy General People”. Participants chanted various slogans and demanded justice.
The protesters alleged that despite the bloodshed and loss of hundreds of lives during the July-August mass uprising, senior Jatiya Party leaders continued to maintain secret communications with the ousted Awami League and Sheikh Hasina, who is currently staying in India.
They also accused the Jatiya Party of lending political legitimacy to the previous government by participating in the last three national elections. “No accomplices of fascism will be allowed to regain political legitimacy in the new Bangladesh,” the protesters said.
