A couple was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle while walking along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla early Tuesday.
The deceased were Nazrul Islam, 62, and his wife Jharna Begum, 48, of Jinglatali village in the upazila.
According to locals, the couple left home after offering Fajr prayers and were walking along the roadside for their morning exercise when the vehicle hit them near Haripur Mosque around 7am before fleeing the scene.
About an hour later, passers-by spotted them and took them to Gouripur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Prem Lal Das said police would examine CCTV footage along the highway to identify the vehicle involved.
The bodies were later handed over to the family members.
