Water levels in five major rivers across Bangladesh have risen above the danger level following days of incessant rainfall and heavy upstream inflows, raising the risk of flooding in several districts, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
In a special flood bulletin issued at 9:00 am on Friday, the FFWC said the Sangu River was flowing 95 cm above the danger level at the Bandarban station and 23 cm above the danger level at the Dohazari station in Chattogram.
The Matamuhuri River was recorded 47 cm above the danger level at Lama in Bandarban and 32 cm above at Chiringa in Cox’s Bazar.
The Kushiyara River exceeded the danger mark by 18 cm at Markuli in Sunamganj and 10 cm at Fenchuganj in Sylhet.
The Manu River was flowing 35 cm above the danger level at the Manu Rail Bridge station and 80 cm above at the Moulvibazar station, while the Khowai River rose 60 cm above the danger level at Balla in Habiganj.
The FFWC also warned that water levels at several other monitoring stations have reached the alert level, indicating they are close to crossing the danger mark.
These include the Teesta River at Dalia (Nilphamari), Kaunia (Lalmonirhat) and Tarapur (Gaibandha); the Kushiyara River at Sherpur (Moulvibazar); the Surma River at Kanaighat (Sylhet), Chhatak and Sunamganj; the Someshwari River at Kalmakanda (Netrakona); and the Choto Feni River at Companiganj (Noakhali).
The latest forecast comes as continuous monsoon rains and runoff from upstream catchment areas continue to swell rivers across the country, prompting authorities to closely monitor the evolving flood situation and urging residents in low-lying and riverbank areas to remain alert.
