US President Donald Trump has mocked the widespread use of the name “Mohammad” in the Muslim world while discussing Iran’s presidency at an election rally in Georgia on Friday (October 16). However, his joke received little reaction from the audience, Reuters reported.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Dalton, Georgia, Trump said, “If you’re ever in doubt about someone’s name in the Middle East, just call them ‘Mohammad’. You have about a 65 per cent chance of being right. Say, ‘Hello, Mohammad.’ I’ve been doing that for years. Never been wrong.”
Mohammad is one of the most common male names in the Muslim world. Many Muslim families name their sons after Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
Trump made the remarks while discussing Iran at the rally, held inside an aircraft hangar at Dalton Municipal Airport. He was visiting the state to campaign for Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Speaking about Iran’s presidency, Trump said, “Iran is the only country where nobody wants to be president.”
He then pretended to ask several imaginary people named Mohammad whether they wanted to become Iran’s president. Iran’s current president, Masoud Pezeshkian, has been in office since 2024.
However, Trump’s joke drew a largely muted response from the audience.
