The bodies of 75 Palestinians recovered from the rubble of buildings in Gaza City are being laid to rest in a mass funeral on Sunday, after remaining buried for an extended period following Israeli attacks.

Gaza’s Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday (October 18) that the bodies were recovered from the Daraj neighbourhood of Gaza City.

A Gaza Civil Defence official told Al Jazeera that the bodies of around 8,000 Palestinians are still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble across the Gaza Strip.

Since Israel launched its military offensive in October 2023, at least 74,469 Palestinians have been killed and 175,492 injured in Gaza, according to the Health Ministry. The actual toll is believed to be higher, as many victims remain buried beneath destroyed buildings.

Much of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed, leaving many residents without adequate shelter. With large areas along the territory’s borders under Israeli control, many Palestinians have been displaced towards coastal areas.

Despite a ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas last year, Israeli attacks have continued in Gaza, resulting in further casualties.
