Bangladesh builds south asia’s largest medicinal database

 Bangladesh has established South Asia’s largest medicinal plant database, surpassing previous regional records and marking a significant milestone in the country’s biomedical research and drug discovery efforts.

Named the Bangladesh Medicinal Plants and Phytochemical Database (BMPPD), the platform contains information on nearly 700 medicinal plant species and around 63,000 bioactive phytochemical compounds known for their therapeutic properties.
According to Dawn of Bioinformatics, the research organisation behind the initiative, the database is designed to serve as a comprehensive scientific resource for researchers, universities and the pharmaceutical industry.
The organisation said the extensive repository will support the identification of promising natural compounds, accelerate drug discovery, and promote evidence-based research on Bangladesh’s rich medicinal plant diversity.
Researchers believe the database will strengthen domestic research capacity, reduce dependence on foreign scientific resources, and create new opportunities for developing plant-based medicines and healthcare innovations.
The initiative is also expected to enhance collaboration among scientists, academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies, positioning Bangladesh as an emerging hub for medicinal plant research and bioinformatics in South Asia.
