Tensions have escalated across India’s Manipur state after two Meitei men were allegedly killed in an attack blamed on Kuki armed groups, triggering protests outside Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s residence in Imphal.

The two men were killed on Monday morning while collecting firewood in a hilly area near the border of Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts, according to Indian media reports.

The victims were identified as Arubam Ronil, 35, and Lairenlakpam Inaobi, 51. Several others were injured, while three people were reported missing, NDTV reported.

Protesters brought the victims’ bodies to the chief minister’s residence to demonstrate against the killings. Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd before the bodies were taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.

According to the Press Trust of India, a group of 14 people had gone to collect firewood when they came under attack. Police are investigating the incident.

Separately, violence broke out in Thoubal district on Sunday night following stone-throwing during a cultural programme at Khangabok Palli Bazar, Manipur Additional Director General of Police Lahri Dorji Lhatoo said.

The unrest spread to Khangabok and Sangakpham, leaving several people injured. One person who sustained gunshot wounds later died at Raj Medicity hospital.

Security personnel from the Rapid Action Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Assam Rifles and state police were deployed to restore order. The situation was brought under control around 1:50am on Monday.
