At least five people were killed and seven others injured in a tragic road accident in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur on Saturday evening, after they were run over by a passenger bus while collecting eggs spilled onto the highway from an overturned truck.
The accident occurred around 6:30 pm in the Soyadi Bus Stand area on the Dhaka–Khulna Highway.
According to police and local sources, an egg-laden truck travelling from Dhaka to Khulna overturned after a tyre burst, scattering eggs across the road. As local residents rushed to collect the eggs, a speeding passenger bus bound for Narail from Dhaka ploughed into the crowd.
Five people were killed on the spot and at least seven others were injured. The deceased have been identified as Zainal, 27, Arif, 27, and Obaidur, 40, while another victim was the driver of the egg-laden truck. The identities of the remaining victims are yet to be confirmed.
Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station, said efforts are underway to identify all the deceased. The critically injured were taken to hospitals in Bhanga, Faridpur and Dhaka for treatment.
Of the six injured initially taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex, five were later referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
