Heavy rainfall lashed the capital from early Sunday, inundating roads across several neighbourhoods and causing widespread disruption to commuters, students and office-goers.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Dhaka recorded 76 millimetres of rainfall within six hours—from midnight to 6:00am—marking the city’s heaviest downpour so far this month.
The capital received 97 millimetres of rain over the previous 24 hours.
The relentless rain left roads submerged in several areas, including Karwan Bazar, Bijoy Sarani, Manik Mia Avenue, Dhanmondi, Kakrail and Kazipara in Mirpur.
Waterlogging slowed traffic and forced many commuters to wade through ankle- to knee-deep water to reach their destinations.
The situation proved particularly challenging for school and college students, office workers and day labourers, many of whom struggled to travel amid the flooded streets.
Meteorologist Md Tarikul Newaz Kabir said the ongoing wet spell has been driven by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, an active monsoon and atmospheric instability.
He warned that heavy rainfall is likely to continue across Dhaka and several other parts of the country throughout Sunday, with Rajshahi, Rangpur, Chattogram and Dhaka divisions expected to receive the highest rainfall.
The weather office, however, forecasts that rainfall may gradually decrease from Monday.
The prolonged monsoon rains over the past week have already triggered flooding in at least seven districts, with Chattogram and Sylhet divisions among the worst-affected regions, although rainfall there eased slightly on Saturday.
